Golden Light Pond Hockey Official Tournament Rules
  1. At the start of the game, puck flip with the winner choosing whether they want to start with the puck first or cede to the other team; the team who doesn’t start with the puck the first half will commence the second half with the puck. NO FACEOFFS.
  2. All players are required to wear hockey helmets fastened with a chin strap and hockey skates. While protective equipment is optional, it is highly recommended.
  3. Goalie equipment and goalie sticks are strictly prohibited.
  4. Each team must have both light and dark jerseys or uniforms. In the Hockey Finder site schedule the team’s jersey color will be indicated.
  5. A minimum of one off-ice pond official/referee will oversee the game, managing scoring, time, puck reset, and adjudicating infractions.
  6. Referees have the authority to grant a “penalty shot” to the opposing team for flagrant minor penalties or consistent reckless play. The penalty shot, taken from center ice, must be attempted within 30 seconds of the penalty being called. Any player from the opposing team can take the shot, and possession of the puck is awarded to the team following the penalty shot attempt, irrespective of the shot’s outcome.
  7. Any major penalty posing a risk of injury to another player results in the player’s ejection from the tournament. The Head Referee and/or Off-ice pond official will decide major penalties in consultation with the game referee.
  8. Major penalties include abuse of officials, encompassing yelling, swearing, or disputing calls.
  9. Checking is strictly prohibited, and violations may result in minor penalties unless deemed serious enough for a major penalty by the off-ice pond official.
  10. Slapshots are not allowed and may incur a minor penalty.
  11. Players are prohibited from falling or lying on the ice to defend the goal area, resulting in a minor penalty.
  12. Goaltending is forbidden, and players cannot remain stationary in the crease area. A warning is issued for the first violation, and subsequent violations result in a penalty shot. If the violation prevented an imminent goal, the referee may award a goal at their discretion.
  13. Contacting the puck with a stick above the waist leads to a loss of possession.
  14. Saucer passes (pucks lifted low, below the knee) are permissible.
  15. If a puck goes out of bounds, the last team to touch it forfeits possession. During restart, the defender must provide 2-stick lengths of space.
  16. No off-sides or icing calls apply.
  17. Goals can be scored from any area of the rink.
  18. Referees announce the score after each goal, including those from minor penalties.
  19. Teams must yield half the ice to opponents after a goal or infraction.
  20. Games consist of two 15-minute halves with a 2-minute halftime.
  21. In case of a tie, play shifts to sudden death format, progressing to a shootout if needed.
  22. All games are running-time, and substitutions can occur during play or while retrieving the puck. Substitutions must occur near the player’s bench, and there is no stoppage of play after goals or penalties.
  23. Players can only play on one team per weekend, with any violation resulting in removal for the event, and all associated teams forfeiting remaining games.
  24. Rosters are final at 8:00 a.m. 72 hours prior to the start of the tournament, with no substitutions allowed during the event.
  25. Setting picks in the offensive zone is prohibited.
  26. All players must visibly display credentials during the game; those without credentials cannot play.
  27. Team captains must ensure the correct score is logged on the scorecard, acknowledging agreement by signing. Scoring challenges must be addressed with the Tournament Director within 60 minutes of game end.
  28. In the event of a forfeit during pool play, the non-forfeiting team receives a win with assigned goals for and against based on their other pool play games, determined at the conclusion of the pool play round for tiebreaker purposes.
  29. All rules subject to change.
